Does it make sense?
No one is born a great reader. It takes practice. Kicking
around the ball will not make you a great soccer player, and reading anything,
any old way, will not make you a great reader.
When you read and "don't get it", ask your self, "What strategies did I use? Can I try a different one that is more appropriate?"
Reading strategies are mindful ways readers create meaning from text. Not every strategy is appropriate for all text types. Experimenting with the different strategies will enable you to recognize which strategy is best for your purpose.
You may employ these strategies automatically, but when asked to read difficult text, you may need to slow down and actively select the appropriate strategy. For example, you may be very good at visualizing your AR novels, but without sustained effort to conscientiously imagine in your mind's eye a complex movie, you may get lost in challenging text.
